EMDR is an evidence-based therapy
model originally designed to relieve the suffering associated with traumatic memories such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can also be used for other forms of suffering like anxiety or different disturbances in life. When we have a traumatic experience (in a relationship, work or alone), that trauma gets "trapped" in the right hemisphere of the brain. When trapped, our sympathetic nervous system (the fight or flight response), gets ignited and a "trigger" occurs. Almost anything can set it off. This happens because we develop strong negative beliefs about ourselves because of these memories. So, a current experience with a loved one can feel REALLY BIG if the trauma is still stuck there on the right side of the brain. It is through bi-lateral stimulation (repeated eye movements) we are able to move that traumatic memory to the left side of our brains where we do our logical thinking and reprocessing. Once we are able to get that memory moved over, we can reactivate neural networks and desensitize the experience associated with that traumatic memory. I describe it to my patients "it's like looking through a set of binoculars." "You will still have the images in your mind, but it will be fuzzy like when you are trying to focus in on an image with binoculars." "It won't be clear anymore and it won't have the same reactionary response it has had, all your life!"
When traditional psychiatric and therapeutic approaches don't give you the answers you need, and you are exhausted trying to figure things on your own, take the guesswork out once and for all and take a look at the organ responsible for the behavior. It is interesting when we are suffering in other parts of our bodies, we get imaging done to get a clearer picture of what is going on. With a SPECT brain scan, we image five major regions of the brain that impact behaviors. This process helps to better guide diagnosis and treatment options as they relate to depression, anxiety, PTSD and so many others. In looking at these areas of the brain, we find out where imbalances occur (see left image above). These imbalances can cause such unnecessary pain and suffering. We look to correct these imbalances by understanding the blood flow patterns in the brain. We then collaborate with cutting edge doctors so we can together find the correct treatment plan and change the course of your life.
If interested in a SPECT scan the process involves the following: 1.) Coming into my office for a comprehensive history evaluation, 2.) A referral is completed by me, and an appointment is made to visit the Amen Clinic in Costa Mesa, 3.) A visit is made for you to receive your SPECT scan, 4.) A return visit to my office where I will review and read the scan images and go over treatment planning specifically designed for you.
Fear keeps many people trapped in life and unable to move forward whether that fear is driven by depression or by an overwhelming sense of anxiety. I can help you to work through those fears and pinpoint exactly what it is that keeps you stuck. Often times depression is associated with how we are thinking about ourselves or a negative belief we have about our lives. Other times there isn't one thought or thing that's causing you to feel so low. The feeling just comes and it's there, like an unwelcomed visitor. Learning why these feelings come and how to manage or regulate them is key in finding relief. There are times an individual will come in forgetting things or a special event or anniversary and their loved one feels hurt or unimportant. The relationship feels damaged or lost. Sometimes that can be the sign of ADD. It is not necessarily something that is being done on purpose. Learning how to recognize what is really going on and creating understanding along with brain health is exactly what is needed to create repair.
I use various modalities that bring relief and hope. When you leave your first session you will know that there is a way out of the madness and that you can find peace once again.
